When you hear “Lake Como” what do you think of? For me – gardens, money, boats, villas and posh people! I have been all over Italy, and It is safe to say this is my favorite country by far. I truly did not think I could possibly love this country any more than I already do… That all changed once we arrived in Varrena, Lake Como. Imagine driving through a tunnel in a mountain and as you come out the other side you suddenly understand the true meaning of “La Dolce Vita”.
Lake Como is definitely known as a relaxing destination, as it should be… I have really never experienced a place quite as beautiful, peaceful and tranquil as this charming Lake! Lake Como is a pretty large Lake with over 15 different towns on its coast. There is a convenient ferry that transports you from town to town (this is much more time efficient and fun!) I recommend taking the ferry, as you get the lovely views of the towns from the water, as well as saving a lot of time!
Where to stay?
We stumbled across gold when finding the wonderful Villa Cipressi in Varenna… It was not planned for us to stay at this hotel, yet I always say everything always works out for the best! (So true in this situation!) I really could not imagine a more perfect Villa for us to stay in. Villa Cipressi has a series of historic buildings all built in 1400-1800!
For breakfast, they had the most amazing breakfast spread with lots of local fresh Italian fruits, nuts, and they even had almond milk!!! I was SO HAPPY waking in this magical place, with the view out over the calm & peaceful water, and having breakfast with the best fresh fruit I have ever had! (Great vegan & gluten-free options here)
Which Lake Como towns are worth visiting?
I fell in love right away with this colorful picturesque town! Varenna is by far my favorite out of the towns we visited! I could seriously spend hours sitting at a cafe on the shore enjoying the magical view of the beautiful lake surrounded by the Swiss Alps, birds flying from mountain to mountain, and happy butterflies gracing us with their beauty! Make sure to stroll down the “Lover’s Walk”. It is a 5-minute walk right on the water with some breathtaking views!
This is one of the larger towns that to truly see all of it, I would suggest spending a night or two. For my family and I, we found Bellagio too “touristy” for our liking. We really enjoy the less busy, more local places to fully “live as the locals do”. With that being said, Bellagio definitely has its charm and beauty! It is full of beautiful steep cobblestone streets, gardens so well kept its amazing, and villas right out of a movie!
This is one of the less popular towns on Lake Como (only as it is not as well known and less popular.) I found this to be to my advantage, as it was less busy and much calmer!
(You should definitely check out Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo!)
I love wearing sun dresses in Italy, and especially Lake Como… I do not know why, but it sort of makes me feel like an Italian Princess! 🙂 (BTW, these sandals are the MOST comfortable shoes I have ever bought. I definitely recommend them!)

Overall, I was most definitely impressed with this breathtaking place! I seriously feel as though it is right out of some fairytale movie! If it is possible, I love Italy even more now than I did before! It is true to say this is my new favorite place in the world! 🗺
